However high Hugh Nugent flies in his career, the conditional jockey is unlikely to have many prouder moments than partnering Fortescue to victory in the Listed greatbritishstallionshowcase.co.uk Swinley Chase.

Not only was it a first winner at Ascot, and one which reduced his 5lb claim as his 40th under rules, but it came in the colours of his grandfather Tim Nixon aboard a fine stayer produced by the owner-breeder.

Nixon has been a long-standing supporter of both Henry Daly and the trainer's mentor, Captain Tim Forster, with runners from this family.

Fortescue is by Shirocco out of Last Of Her Line, an unraced sibling of Nixon and Daly's Sail By The Stars, a ten-time winner who he is also breeding from.

Last Of Her Line has produced winners Go West Young Man and Lord Grantham but Fortescue, now a winner of six who has an entry in the Randox Grand National, is very much her best as she responded to Nugent's every request.

"Any winner is special, any winner on a Saturday is special but to ride a horse that was owned and bred by my grandad means everything," said Nugent to ITV.

He later added: [Nixon] has had horses with Henry since he started, it’s just fantastic, my family are here as well and it means a lot.

"He’s in the National, it's touch and go to get into that, but we’ll enjoy the day and then sit down and see where we go."
