First Group winner for Zarak as Lizaid wins Baden-Baden Group 3
The son of Dubawi and Zarkava has made a promising start to his stud career
Zarak, the Aga Khan's first-season sire and blue-blooded son of Dubawi and the outstanding Zarkava, was provided with a first Group winner when Lizaid landed the Preis des Derbysiegers Sisfahan at Baden-Baden on Sunday.
Owned and bred by Gestut Haus Zoppenbroich, the filly is the first foal out of Group 2 Diana Trial third Litaara, a Wiener Walzer half-sister to German Group 2 scorer Liang Kay and the stakes-winning Laeya Star.
Trained by Peter Schiergen, the two-year-old was making it a second win from as many starts.
Zarak, who stands at Haras de Bonneval and is the leading first-crop sire in France by prize-money this term, has been represented by the winners of 13 races and £383,096 in prize-money, his runners including Prix Marcel Boussac runner-up Times Square.
Zarak landed his only start at two for Alain de Royer-Dupré before winning his first start at three and then finishing second to Almanzor in the Prix du Jockey Club. He also added three more valuable Group placings to his name later that year.
At four, Zarak won the Dubai Millennium Stakes before finishing fourth in the Dubai Turf. He avenged his narrow defeat by Cloth Of Stars in the Prix Ganay when striking in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. He concluded his racing career when finishing midfield behind Enable in the 2017 Arc.
The eight-year-old is the product of two champions in Darley supersire Dubawi and Zarkava, who topped her unbeaten career with success in the 2008 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
By Zamindar, Zarkava has produced two further black-type winners in stakes scorer and Qatar Prix Vermeille third Zarkamiya, a daughter of Frankel who is carrying to Siyouni, and another Listed winner in Siyouni filly Zaykava, who visited Dubawi this term. She also has the two-time winning Invincible Spirit gelding Zarkallani to her credit too.
Zarkava has a three-year-old colt by Sea The Stars named Zaskar, a two-year-old filly by Dubawi called Zarka and a yearling filly by Frankel. She produced a Siyouni colt this year and was covered by Lope De Vega.
