'Filly for the future' Thiossane impresses in Prix de la Cascade at Longchamp
Past winners of the fillies' maiden include the great Zarkava
The Prix de la Cascade at Longchamp has a fine roll of honour over the years, namely the magnificent Zarkava in 2007 and this term's Prix Penelope winner Agave, who struck in the contest 12 months ago.
While this year's winner Thiossane has some way to go to emulate those two, the Haras du Cadran and Alain Jathiere-bred daughter of Le Havre is clearly held in high esteem by connections.
Pulling three-quarters of a length clear of Carvana - a Siyouni three-parts sister to Prix Saint-Alary winner Queen's Jewel in the colours of owner-breeder Wertheimer et Frere - connections of the Andre Fabre-trained filly have plenty to look forward to.
Cadran's Pierre Talvard was on hand and said: "She is magnificent in every respect except her right foreleg is not quite correct. The x-rays were excellent but she barely raised a bid and so I bought her back. I accepted €30,000 from Laurent Benoit on the basis that he promised she would go to Monsieur Fabre.
"The dam is by Dubawi and is from a fantastic Niarchos family. I think she’s a filly for the future and is far from just a two-year-old."
Further updates to the page look likely in the future with Thiossane's half-brother selling well at Arqana's August Sale last month, while Qatari Perfection has a filly foal by Arc hero Sottsass.
He added: "I sold a very nice Cracksman colt from her last month [making €185,000 to JS Bloodstock Consultancy] and she has a magnificent filly foal by Sottsass. She is carrying to Hello Youmzain as I was looking to put a little bit of speed into her."
The Prix de Fontenoy, the equivalent contest for colts and geldings, was won by another Fabre inmate in the Sumbe-owned Padishakh.
The son of Wootton Bassett was following in the paths of subsequent top-level winners Victor Ludorum and Maxios in winning the mile race by two and a half lengths.
Out of the stakes-winning Lord Of England mare Penny Lane, the colt sold to Sumbe for €130,000 from Haras d'Etreham at Arqana last summer. Penny Lane is a full-sister to last year's Preis der Diana winner Palmas as well as Group 3 winners Peaceful Love and Peace Royale.
