Exhibition dedicated to Lucian Freud's lifelong love of horses opens in London
Ordovas in Savile Row is playing host until December 16
With this year being the centenary of the birth of Lucian Freud, Ordovas on Savile Row in London is commemorating it with Horses & Freud, a loan exhibition dedicated to the artist’s lifelong love of horses.
It brings together a carefully selected group of paintings, portraits and sketchbooks loaned from both museum and private collections, and explores the influence of horses on his life and art, and the diverse friendships and acquaintances that were made as a result.
The exhibition includes Man in a Sports Shirt, 1982-1983, a portrait of the bookmaker Irving Tindler, who sat for the artist in order to settle one of Freud’s mounting debts. It has not been seen in public since it was exhibited at the Hayward Gallery in 1988.
The exhibition also includes a previously unseen letter from the National Turf Protection Society, which was sent to the artist in 1965 as a final warning before his subsequent ban from betting and racing circles, as well as a notebook listing horses on which he wanted to place bets.
The catalogue introduction is an interview with Andrew Parker Bowles, whom Freud (1922–2011) first met in 1983, when he arranged for him to access the stables of the Household Cavalry.
The exhibition opened this week and runs until December 16.
