Fortunately for a dyed-in-the-wool point-to-pointing man, Clive Bennett has had enough success of his own from the family of Shishkin to be satisfied watching the youngster’s progress without untold jealousy.

Were it not for a family intervention, the six-year-old son of Sholokhov might just have been lighting up the amateur sport in Britain in the pink Bennett silks, rather than rising through the novice hurdle division in the yellow of Gold Cup-winning owners Joe and Marie Donnelly.
