Dwan's Ballyreddin heading to Spring Store Sale with choice lots

With the National Hunt world descending on Doncaster for the Goffs UK Spring Store Sale on Tuesday, John Dwan of Ballyreddin Stud is looking forward to offering a choice draft of National Hunt prospects.

Dwan is well known as the breeder of last year's Aintree Grand National hero One For Arthur, who is out of Dwan's Trempolino mare Nonnetia and sold as a yearling by the Irishman to John Dineen for €14,000 at the Tattersalls Ireland November National Hunt Sale in 2010.

The Ballyreddin Stud draft for Tuesday's Spring Store Sale features four horses - a Lucarno filly (Lot 82), a Getaway gelding (Lot 164), a Presenting gelding (Lot 229) and a Jeremy gelding (Lot 257).

Heading into the ring first will be the Lucarno filly who is out of the winning Persian Bold mare Persian Walk - a half-sister to multiple Graded performer Royal Shakespeare and to the dam of Grade 3 winner Rock The Kasbah.

A former resident of Longford House Stud in County Tipperary, Lucarno has produced the Listed-winning mare Dame De Compagnie among his leading jumps progeny.

Sold last year From 235 offered, 209 sold for turnover of £5,951,500 (+31 per cent), an average of £28,476 (+22 per cent) and median of £23,000 (+15 per cent).

Dwan said: "She's a good scopey filly with a very nice walk. Anybody that has been looking at her seems to like her. The racing programme has improved significantly in Britain and Ireland for fillies. It would appear the market has improved over the last 12 months for fillies.

"There's potential for the fillies to be raced and with a filly such as the Lucarno I offer who has a pedigree, there's a lot of paddock value with her as well when her racing days are over.

Perhaps the standout among Dwan's draft is the Getaway gelding out of the placed point-to-point Persian Mews mare What A Mewsment, a half-brother to the Grade 1-placed Klepht and the Listed-winning hurdler Welsh Shadow.

The three-year-old received a significant update ahead of his intended date in the ring as his Yeats half-sister Whatzdjazz finished second in the Listed Mares' Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham last month.

Dwan went to €31,000 to secure the son of Getaway at the Tattersalls Ireland February National Hunt Sale in 2016 and added: "He's got a very strong pedigree and he's a very correct horse. Of the mare's four winners, three of them are now black type progeny which shows she's breeding good racehorses."

With the added bonus of What A Mewsment being a sister to Grade 2 hero Celestial Gold and the gelding's sire responsible for Willie Mullins' Getabird, Dwan is hopeful that his investment well be rewarded.

Dwan said: "Getaway is a young stallion that appears to be getting plenty of winners and he had two more win on Sunday. To have a horse by a good young active stallion you would hope it puts you in a good position."

The late Presenting is also represented in Dwan's draft in the shape of a gelding who is from the family of the talented Menorah, who he describes as a "really attractive-looking horse" and a gelding by the late Jeremy - best known as the sire of the jumps winners Our Conor and Who Dares Win.

Dwan added: "Presenting is a proven sire and they're not making no more them. Jeremy seems to have come alive as the jumps sire and with the way he's going, you'd hope there's interest in him.

"They're four nice horses and hopefully they are attractive to the market."

A total of 269 lots will go under the hammer from 10am on Tuesday morning to mark the beginning of the three-day Goffs UK Spring Sale. The remaining two days feature the Spring Horses in Training and point-to-point Sale.
