Doyles play a successful waiting game for Karisto at Tattersalls Ireland
Son of Stormy River topped the final session of the July Store Sale
James and Ellen Doyle of Baltimore Stables, along with Evergreen Stud's Micheal Conaghan, will be hoping the old adage of good things coming to those who wait proves true in the case of the Stormy River gelding they purchased during Part Two of the Tattersalls Ireland July Store Sale.
First spotted on Tuesday during inspections, the trio were forced to wait until Thursday afternoon to hunt down their quarry, who was sold for €30,000 by Willie Browne's Mocklershill Stables as lot 506.
"He is a very good mover and we thought he was the outstanding horse here today, considering there are some lovely horses in the sale," commented James Doyle. "He was the one we really wanted and if we hadn't bought him we would have gone home empty-handed. Michael [Browne] showed him to me on Tuesday and I really liked him so I've been waiting a while to get him."
Named Karisto, the handsome bay gelding was the only store in either session of the sale by Prix Jean Prat winner Stormy River, who stood at the late Larissa Kneip's Haras de Saint-Arnoult for six of the last seven seasons.
He will commence his career with the Doyle siblings at their Baltimore Stables base outside Enniscorthy in County Wexford, from where US champion steeplechaser and American Grand National winner The Mean Queen won her four-year-old maiden.
Crawford finally strikes the winning bid
Steven Crawford had experienced the frustration of finishing as underbidder on a number of occasions over the two days, including when falling short in his attempt to buy Part One's joint session-topper.
Happily for the trainer, he was able to see off the competition for Moyfinn Stud's gelding from the second crop of Affinisea. Ronnie O'Neill's stallion son of Sea The Stars was in demand once more at Tattersalls Ireland following on from his successful showing in Part One of the sale.
Crawford, who along with his brother Stuart has struck up a successful working relationship with Isaac Souede and Simon Munir, paid €25,000 for the gelding whose broodmare sire, Stowaway, put Whytemount Stud on the map.
He is the first foal out of Blue Epona, who was third in both her bumper runs for Willie Mullins and hails from one of the best families in the National Hunt studbook, responsible for Grade 1 winners including Morley Street, Granville Again, Ferny Hollow, Fury Road, Lovethehigherlaw and Hand Inn Hand.
It is an instantly recognisable Parkhill family and one that Crawford has enjoyed success with in its various branches.
"I thought he was the nicest horse today, and he has a really strong pedigree, I have had a few from the family before and they have done well so hopefully this horse will continue that. We have options for him as he could go for a bumper or take the pointing route," Crawford explained.
Coral stands on firm foundations
One purchase from the sale who is definitely going point-to-pointing is the Pillar Coral gelding bought by Eoin McDonagh of Shanaville Stables.
Offered by Kereen Stables on behalf of Pat O'Donovan, the half-brother to Monteip (who won a bumper at Limerick last Christmas) was bought for €24,000 by McDonagh. That sale vindicated connections' decision to buy him back at €3,000 when offered as a foal at the Tattersalls Ireland November National Hunt Sale.
"He goes point-to-pointing," said McDonagh. "He is a good, strong sort, I like the sire and I have seen a few by him and I like them. He has a nice pedigree, his half-brother was a bumper winner, and he looks like a horse who will come to hand quickly."
That pedigree McDonagh mentioned includes Pomme Tiepy, who was twice successful at Grade 2 level over fences and second in Punchestown's Grade 1 Champion Novice Chase for Willie Mullins, who also trained this gelding's Apple Tree dam Riltree to win a maiden hurdle at Sligo.
If ever a stallion was bred to be a successful sire it is Pillar Coral, who stands at Kilbarry Lodge Stud. An unraced son of Zamindar, he is a half-brother to the late, lamented Martaline and to Group 1 winner Reefscape and Group 2 winner Coastal Path, both of whom sired Grade 1 winners from limited opportunities, for differing reasons.
Their dam Coraline is a Sadler's Wells full-sister to Trellis Bay, the second dam of New Bay, and a half-sister to Irish Oaks winner Wemyss Bight, dam of Group 1 winner and sire Beat Hollow, and to Hope, the dam of Oasis Dream and Poule d'Essai des Pouliches winner Zenda, dam of Kingman.
Pillar Coral's first crop are just three-years-old and, given their sire's impeccable and impressive lineage, their performances next season are eagerly anticipated.
Grand National winning vendors to the fore
Glen Stables' graduates from Tattersalls Ireland's store sales have brought honour and glory to Marie Harding's Cork farm, most notably in April when Noble Yeats triumphed in the Grand National and Lookaway followed him into the Aintree winner's enclosure after the very next race, the Grade 2 bumper.
As the final Irish store sale of the year wound to a conclusion, Harding offered a Mahler gelding out of Dance On Deploy, an unraced daughter of Deploy, who can trace her pedigree all the way back to the Tizzards' beloved multiple Grade 1 winner Cue Card.
Colin Motherway purchased the May-born bay for €24,000 and he will be hoping that lightning does indeed strike twice with his graduates of the July Sale.
The Cork handler turned the most notable pinhooking profit from the first Tattersalls Ireland July Store Sale, where he purchased Encanto Bruno for €20,000, and sold him to John McConnell for £210,000 after he made a winning debut in a Ballynoe four-year-old maiden.
Mahler, the Queen's Vase winner who was placed in the St Leger and Melbourne Cup, had earlier supplied the most expensive filly of the session.
Barnawheel Stud consigned the full-sister to Miss Tynte, who won three hurdles for David Pipe, and she was purchased for €20,000 by Richard Downes.
"She's for an existing client and will be trained by Charles Byrnes," Downes explained. "She is a very athletic filly and a great walker with lots of size to her. She is a well-bred filly too and we liked her a lot."
As well as Miss Tynte, her dam Top Quality has Beatthebullet who was fourth in the Grade 2 National Hunt Challenge Cup Novice Chase at Cheltenham. Top Quality is a Simply Great full-sister to Simply Dashing who was twice successful in Grade 2 chases at Ascot.
Facts and figures
The July Sale is still in its infancy and with no August National Hunt Sale this year, the catalogue was expanded for 2022 to include a Part Two section.
That second session saw 250 stores offered with 163 selling, which produced a clearance rate of 65 per cent. Those 163 horses generated turnover of €1,074,300 to give an average price of €6,591 with the median at €5,000. A total of five horses sold for a minimum of €20,000.
