Derby credentials on show for sons of Frankel and Camelot at Newmarket and Navan

Bluebloods John Leeper and Sir Lucan showcased their credentials for the Cazoo Derby when landing Listed contests at Newmarket and Navan on Saturday.

The Ed Dunlop-trained John Leeper, a son of Frankel and multiple Group/Grade 1-winning Oaks heroine Snow Fairy, and named after his legendary late father, became his dam's first stakes winner after powering home in the Fairway Stakes under William Buick.

John Leeper, who is a three-parts brother to Pride Stakes third Virgin Snow, pulled hard early on but warmed to his task to win by a length and a quarter from the well-regarded Tasman Bay, a son of Le Havre trained by dual Olympic gold medallist Sir Mark Todd.

The winner is one of three sons of Frankel in the Derby frame, along with Thursday's Dante Stakes scorer Hurricane Lane and Listed victor Mohaafeth. Frankel came close to Derby victory through Cracksman in 2017, while his daughter Anapurna won the Oaks two years later.

Frankel and dual Derby hero Camelot were the pair who really lit up the 2012 campaign, and Sir Lucan is a son of the Coolmore sire, who is also no one-trick-pony when it comes to Epsom contenders, Youth Spirit having won this month's Chester Vase.

Sir Lucan is a full-brother to Sir Dragonet, a close fifth to Anthony Van Dyck at Epsom and a dual top-level winner in Australia including the Cox Plate.

Out of the Group-placed Oasis Dream mare Sparrow, Sir Lucan came home strongly in the Yeats Stakes at Navan to pip fellow Derby entry and Ballydoyle stablemate Wordsworth, a full-brother to St Leger winner and Coolmore National Hunt sire Kew Gardens.

On a typically helter-skelter Saturday afternoon, Kingman's son Palace Pier added a third Group 1 win to his CV when taking the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury.

The colt's Highland Reel half-brother is a stablemate at the Gosdens, having made 320,000gns when purchased by McCalmont Bloodstock from Highclere at Tattersalls October Book 1 last year.

The duo are out of unraced Nayef mare Beach Frolic, who sold to MV Magnier at the Tattersalls December Mare Sale for 2,200,000gns.

Later on the Newbury card, Fillies' Trial Stakes winner Eshaada made it two from two, with trainer Roger Varian suggesting the Ribblesdale Stakes would be next for the daughter of Muhaarar.

A Shadwell homebred, the three-year-old is another out of a Nayef mare in Muhawalah - a winner herself for Varian and a half-sister to Derrinstown Stud sire and top-class miler Tamayuz.
