Group 1 Deutsches Derby winner and champion German three-year-old Laccario is to retire to Haras d’Annebault.

The son of Scalo comes from a long tail of Deutsches Derby winners, with his grandsire and the next two, Lando, Acatenango and Surumu, all winners of the Classic, and who went on to become influential sires.

Scalo, who won the Group 1 Preis von Europa, Lando and Laccario all raced for Mannfred Ostermann’s Gestüt Ittlingen, and Laccario comes from a family also long associated with his stud.

His dam Laccata, by Lomitas, won and is a daughter of La Donna (Shirley Heights), who was third in the Group 1 Preis der Diana. It is the immediate family of Lando himself, the sire Laroche, who was another winner of the Deutsches Derby for Ittlingen, Group 1 winner Lovelyn and German champion two-year-old Love Academy. This means the pedigree is free of Sadler’s Wells, Danzig, Monsun and Linamix.

Winners of the Deutsches Derby have nearly as good a record as sires in Europe recently as winners of the Epsom original, with Adlerflug, Sea The Moon and now Isfahan, sire of this year’s Deutsches Derby winner Sisfahan with his first crop, flying the flag for the race.

Laccario was far from a one-trick pony, however, as he also won the Group 2 Union-Rennen over a mile and a quarter, finished second in the Grade 1 Joe Hirsch Classic at Belmont Park and was placed in several other Group races in Germany and the USA.

The deal to stand the five-year-old at Haras d’Annebault was brokered by Richard Venn.

Haras d’Annebault’s Niccolò Riva said: “We are delighted to have Laccario here.

"German Derby winners have had such a good record as sires recently on the Flat and jumping, and Laccario should prove an ideal dual-purpose stallion, with his outcross pedigree, his performances, including his toughness typical of German horses, and his physique making him ideal for that job."

He added: "Breeding rights will be available and Herr Ostermann will be sending him mares as well."

Laccario is set to stand for €3,000 and should be among the stallions taking part in the Route des Etalons - French stallion trail - which is set to take place on January 22-23, 2022.
