Star mares Benie and Magic among treasures on offer at Tattersalls Ireland sale
The past year has proved exceptional once again for graduates of the Tattersalls Ireland National Hunt Sale, with Grade 1 winners including Cheltenham Festival heroes Minella Indo, Appreciate It and Chantry House, and those involved in the 2021 edition will be hoping for similar results.
This year's sale, which has a five-day run from Sunday, has something for everyone, ranging from the first foals of Goliath Du Berlais, Capri and Crystal Ocean, and the first Irish crops of Maxios and Poet's Word, to some particularly well-related yearlings, plus top-class racemares with exciting coverings.
Affinisea was the busiest sire in Britain and Ireland in 2021 when covering a staggering 324 mares, and one of the sale highlights is his half-brother to Fiddlerontheroof (lot 894), winner of the Grade 1 Tolworth Hurdle last year and recent winner of the Listed Colin Parker Memorial Chase at Carlisle for Colin Tizzard. The February-born colt foal will be presented by Ballincurrig House Stud.
Ballincurrig House will also offer the only foal by Doctor Dino in the catalogue, a chestnut colt (866) out of a winning full-sister to Grand National hero Minella Times, who sold to John Nallen from Lewinstown Farm for €31,000 at this sale in 2013.
Walk In The Park's rise to superstardom has been well managed by Coolmore, and his batch of offerings include Ballincurrig House's yearling half-brother to Champion Chase hero Special Tiara (121); Clononeen Stud's yearling half-brother (146) to dual Group 1 Grand Prix d'Automne Hurdle winner Galop Marin; and the Cleaboy Stud and Coppice Farm-consigned filly foal (551) out of Group 1 Prix Maurice Gillois winner Royale Flag.
There will also be a poignant tone to the sale via the final yearling crop of Mount Nelson, Boardsmill Stud's versatile son of Rock Of Gibraltar whose leading lights under both codes include Group 1-winning sprinter Librisa Breeze, the high-class Berkshire and Stayers' Hurdle winner Penhill.
Mount Nelson has five yearlings remaining in the sale, including a half-sister to the Listed-placed hurdler Pisgah Pike consigned by Anne McDonnell (196) and Terramount House's gelding from the family of Stolen Silver and Diamond King (51).
The late Jeremy is another greatly missed sire, all the more so after this year's Cheltenham Festival, where he was represented by Supreme Novices' Hurdle winner Appreciate It and Mares' Hurdle winner Black Tears, but his son Success Days, a multiple Group winner on the Flat, is represented here, with eight foals set to go under the hammer.
Among them are Moyfinn Stud's colt (275) out of a half-sister to the dam of Ballymore Novices' Hurdle scorer Bob Olinger; Kilbarry Lodge Stud's colt (411) out of a half-sister to Rogue Angel and from the family of Minella Indo; and the same operation's filly (425) out of a winning full-sister to multiple Grade 1 scorer Outlander and Grade 2-winning hurdler Western Leader.
Crystal Ocean covered a book long on both quantity and quality in his first season at The Beeches Stud, and the son of Sea The Stars has 46 lots to represent him at the showpiece five-day sale.
They include Golden Farm's colt (232) out of a winning full-sister to Top Novices' Hurdle winner Lalor; Kilbarry Lodge Stud's filly (410) out of a Listed-placed Kayf Tara half-sister to Don Poli; Yellowford Farm's colt (686) out of a winning half-sister to the great Hurricane Fly; the Glen Stables-consigned colt (836) out of an unraced sister to Battleoverdoyen; and The Beeches Stud's filly (1161) out of a full-sister to Punchestown festival Grade 1 winner One Track Mind.
There is also a feast of star National Hunt mares on offer led by Closutton Stables' Benie Des Dieux (1253), the winner of four Grade 1 hurdles and in foal to Walk In The Park.
Also among those taking the eye are the Baroda Stud-consigned Magic Of Light (1251), runner-up in the Grand National and a dual Grade 2 winner over hurdles, who is in foal to Crystal Ocean, and Closutton's Salsaretta (1257), a Grade 2 winner over fences and carrying to Blue Bresil.
Other notable offerings over the course of the five-day auction include Foxleigh House's Harzand yearling half-brother to The New One (149); Evergreen Stud's Galilee Forlonge (102), a Masked Marvel yearling half-sister to Asterion Forlonge; Yellowford Farm's Wings Of Eagles foal (689) who is a half-brother to Bellshill; and Limekiln Stud's Getaway foal (886) who is a half-brother to Yorkhill.
The sale starts at 10.30am on Sunday.
