Following his giant-slaying act on Altior over Christmas, Nube Negra has just about earned the distinction of being the most famous Spanish jumper since the late Duke of Alburquerque.
The Duke’s lion-hearted but calamitous endeavours in the Grand National over two decades earned him a fond place in National Hunt folklore, and even briefly inspired Nube Negra’s breeder Luis Alvarez Cervera to attempt to follow in his footsteps.
He wisely came to his senses and pursued equestrian sports instead, becoming the first of only two of his countrymen to have represented Spain at the Olympics six times.
