More for bloodstock fans to watch on YouTube while enduring lockdown

With much of the world in lockdown in an attempt to halt the spread of the coronavirus, we all need things we can do around the house to stave off boredom and keep us intellectually stimulated.

To that end, we've been collating some of the most entertaining and informative videos about bloodstock and the wider racing industry on YouTube.

Our last batch of ten clips proved so popular we've found a few more, including some recommendations from readers.

A legendary horseman in action

Thanks to Milo Corbett for unearthing an absolute gem.

This episode of the US documentary Enterprise from 1981 follows the flamboyant horseman Tom Gentry's attempts to pinhook a Hoist The Flag filly at Keeneland that year. It has everything: footage of Affirmed covering a mare; a bulky old television set by Gentry's boxes at Keeneland showing a "promotional videotape"; Bob Hope performing at the consignor's pre-sale party; the BBA Ireland's Tom Cooper giving his view on the rise of the Kentucky-bred; and a quite breathtaking array of trousers sported by Gentry.

The video has had only 324 views on YouTube up to Sunday; it deserves many, many more.

History brought to life

The Pathé newsreel available to view on YouTube has been a source of entertainment to many readers, and we've found a remarkable piece of thoroughbred history: the sale of Dante's brother to the Maharaja of Baroda for a record-breaking 28,000gns at the Tattersalls yearling sales in 1945.

The horse in question in the clip, which has sound to really set the scene, turned out to be Irish Derby and St Leger winner Sayajirao.

Reader Sean Kilroy has mined another golden nugget of Pathé newsreel footage showing apprentice jockeys at Arthur Goodwill's Newmarket yard in 1957.

While we're wandering down memory lane, here's a short report on the opening of Goffs Kildare Paddocks in 1975.

The record Ir127,000gns yearling mentioned in dispatches is future champion sire Be My Guest, whose statue now greets visitors to Goffs in the entrance to the complex.

Here's a short video of sales at Inglis in Australia in 1967 - conducted out in the open air and in guineas.

We see a chestnut filly by champion sire Todman out of VRC Oaks winner Chicola go under the hammer.

Take a virtual trip to Kentucky

Another recommendation from Sean Kilroy is this Bloodhorse video from 1997 entitled 'Conformation: How To Buy A Winner'.

It includes invaluable input from such esteemed judges as Bob Baffert, Reiley McDonald and Becky Thomas.

Stewart Power spotted this video telling the history of leading Kentucky operation WinStar Farm. It also showcases some of the blue-chip stock on the stud.

Also highlighted by Stewart was this introduction to Kentucky horse country by Mill Ridge Farm's Price Bell jnr. Sure to have you booking a trip when lockdown is over.

Follow the foals

Thanks to the reader who notified us about the joint-project between Ascot and Qipco to follow the journey from a horse's birth to the racecourse.

There have been four episodes so far, focusing on foals born at Tweenhills Stud in Gloucestershire.
