Grey days continue with winners for Whitsbury Manor's freshman
James Thomas assesses the latest picture in the first-season sires standings

Britain and Ireland have experienced a summer heatwave in recent weeks, with soaring temperatures capped by a new record of 40.3C at Coningsby, Lincolnshire in mid-July. In contrast, the outlook across the first-season sire table has endured a prolonged Grey spell.
That is because Havana Grey continues to dominate this year’s division, with the Whitsbury Manor Stud resident running hot to lead the standings across a range of metrics.
First and foremost, the son of Havana Gold has supplied more winners than any other European first-season sire, with a pool of 63 runners yielding 27 winners at an impressive strike-rate of 43 per cent.
