Race preview

The elite of the cycling world are swapping autumnal Europe for springtime New South Wales over the next week for this year’s world road championships.

Seven days of racing kicks off with the elite time-trials in the early hours of Sunday morning, and there are heavyweight showdowns in the men’s and women’s events.

The women get things underway with the big three – Annemiek van Vleuten, Ellen van Dijk and Marlen Reusser – all shorter than 9-4 to take home the rainbow bands.

It’s 8-1 bar those trio, and although it's hard to look past them given their prowess against the clock, they are not the only riders in contention for the prestigious world champions' jersey.

Home hopes are carried on the shoulders of Australian national time-trial champion and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Grace Brown.

The 30-year-old has been a model of consistency this season and only eight days ago won a stage of the Ceratizit Challenge by La Vuelta, showing she remains on top form.

Brown was fourth behind the big three at last year’s Tokyo Olympics but having focused on her time-trialling this season, she could be a spot of value to gatecrash the podium.

The men’s event could be a head-to-head duel between reigning TT king Filippo Ganna and recent Vuelta winner Remco Evenepoel.

Ganna, who is bidding for a third successive TT crown, has not been at his dominant best of late, finishing fourth and fifth in the two time-trials at the Tour de France and third at the European Championship, while it remains to be seen what Evenepoel has left after a gruelling three weeks at the Vuelta. So there is certainly a chance for someone to spoil the party.
