Paris-Roubaix preview

Sunday marks the 119th edition of Paris-Roubaix and a return to its usual spring spot means it looks set to live up to its billing as queen of the Classics.

The winning rider will cross the finish line at the iconic Roubaix Velodrome first but it will be on the 30 sectors of unforgiving cobblestones dotted along the 257.2km route where this race will be decided.

The savagery of those stretches of cobbles have earned the race another moniker, the Hell of the North, and have a habit of derailing even the best. However, if all goes well, Mathieu van der Poel will prove very hard man to beat.

A change in schedule means Sunday's race takes place a week later than usual and after winning the Tour of Flanders a fortnight ago, Van der Poel has had an extra seven days to prepare for one of his primary goals for the season.

The Dutchman finished fourth behind an inspired Michal Kwiatowski in last Sunday's Amstel Gold and will be desperate to make amends for last year's near-miss, where he battled through the mud and rain, only to lose out in a three-man sprint to Sonny Colbrelli.
