Fight preview

Saul Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin complete their epic trilogy when the pair square off in Las Vegas in the early hours of Sunday morning.

It’s another huge fight but it comes five years after they first shared a ring and that isn’t going to boost the chances of Triple G.

The 2017 clash was a closely fought contest that was declared a draw by the judges but it was a fight that Triple G probably edged. A second bout followed but this time Canelo was awarded the majority-decision verdict. Since that pair of bouts the Mexican has gone on to conquer the super-middleweight division and the 32-year-old also had a brief foray into the light-heavyweight ranks.

Canelo’s air of invincibility was removed by a 175lbs defeat to Dmitrii Bivol but that defeat is easily excused as the Mexican was taking on a top-level fighter way above his best weight.

Alvarez is still the undisputed super-middleweight champion and it appears that the Mexican has more in his favour when he takes on Triple G for the third time.

Canelo is a better fighter than he was when he first fought the Kazakh and at the age of 32 there is still plenty left in the Mexican’s tank. It’s hard to believe that Golovkin will be any better five years later and at 40 years of age Triple G has to be past his physical peak.

Golovkin does have a good recent victory over Ryota Murata, but that was at middleweight and stepping up to super-middle is another disadvantage for the Karaganda puncher.

Triple G has been a brilliant fighter and is still a top performer. However, he is facing a test as tough as they come in the twilight of his career. That hasn’t been missed by the layers, who have Canelo in as 1-5 favourite, but the prices look to have underrated the chances of a Mexican stoppage victory.

The first two fights went the distance but this time we have the best version of Cancelo and an aged version of Triple G. At this stage of his career Golovkin is likely to struggle to deal with the speed and explosive power of Alvarez and that could lead to the Mexican winning this fight before the final bell.

Offers of 9-5 certainly seem to underestimate the chances of a Cancelo stopping the Kazakhstan man and that looks worth a punt.
