Big-fight preview

Six years on from their first meeting Derek Chisora and Kubrat Pulev clash for the second time at the O2 Arena on Saturday night.

Pulev won the 2016 Hamburg contest on a split decision but it may well be an earlier finish in Greenwich this time.

The Cobra is the older man at 41 but there are far fewer miles on Pulev's clock. The Bulgarian has contested 31 fights in his professional career and he has fought only seven times since he stepped in with War back in 2016.

Chisora on the other hand, has packed in 13 fights since he lost to the Bulgarian and his overall tally stands at 44 bouts. Many of those contests have been draining and attritional heavyweight contests and Del Boy is no youngster at 38-years-old.

There is no shame in losing to the brilliant Oleksandr Usyk and Chisora put up a decent show in his first bout with Joseph Parker. However, the recent rematch against the Kiwi was a far less spirited effort and Del Boy was downed three times in that contest.

You have to go back to a 2019 victory over the now retired David Price to find the last time the Finchley fighter came out on top and that has to be a worry.

Pulev didn’t put up much resistance against Anthony Joshua in their 2020 bout but the Cobra gained a wide-margin points victory when taking on Jerry Forrest last time out and that suggests the fire still burns.

The majority of Chisora’s recent contests have developed into flat-footed slugfests, and given that’s likely to be the case again, plus bearing in mind the age of these fighters, the bout doesn’t look as certain to go the distance as the prices suggest.

Pulev doesn’t boast huge one-punch power but the Bulgarian has stopped the likes of Alexander Dimitrenko and Alexander Ustinov and Chisora carries enough bang to land a knockout blow too.

There’s nothing really riding on this contest in terms of belts and rankings, and the world title dreams of both boxers are pretty much over. There’s fighting pride on the line, but desire and ambition have probably faded and at 6-5 it could pay to back the fight to end before the final bell.
