Fight preview

Chris Billam-Smith has a hometown fight against Isaac Chamberlain on Saturday in Bournemouth as he seeks to defend his European and Commonwealth cruiserweight titles.

This looks to be an incredibly competitive match-up between two fighters with contrasting styles. Billam-Smith likes to adopt an aggressive approach and comes forward to close down spaces, while Chamberlain has good hand speed, moves well and looks to be the technically superior boxer.

On paper, there doesn’t appear to be a great deal to separate the pair but Billam-Smith is rated as the odds-on favourite, perhaps due to the Gentleman's home advantage.

This will be the 31-year-old’s first big contest in Bournemouth and it remains to be seen whether that will actually be an advantage or if the pressure to perform will have an adverse effect. But as this looks a 50-50 fight, the value lies with underdog Chamberlain.

The Brixton boxer has 14 wins in 15 fights, eight coming inside the distance, and has proven to be incredibly durable having gone the full ten rounds in a unanimous decision defeat to WBO champion Lawrence Okolie earlier in his career.

The one blemish on Billam-Smith’s record is a split decision loss to unbeaten Richard Riakporhe. As neither fighter has ever been stopped despite coming up against some powerful opponents, the 4-7 on offer about this contest going all 12 rounds also looks a solid bet.
