Winners of the Dahlia at Newmarket finished 9412.
Two winners had run at the previous year’s meeting – one in the Coronation Stakes (1) and one in this race (2).
A mouth-watering clash between the previous year’s 1,000 Guineas one-two, Mother Earth and Saffron Beach, turned into a rout. Saffron Beach, who had reversed form with that rival when landing the Sun Chariot Stakes on her last British start, sauntered into the lead two furlongs from home before kicking clear by three and a half lengths to win eased down under William Buick. She gave weight away to all her rivals and was a class apart, which she confirmed when landing the second Group 1 of her career in the Prix Rothschild on her next start.
