'25-1 is fair for the Cesarewitch' - our experts with their horses to follow

Amtiyaz
Fifth, Lingfield, Wednesday, September 2

Amtiyaz has caught the eye on both runs and looks a surefire improver when switched to handicaps.

Well backed on his debut, the John Gosden-trained colt was slowly away and green from the widest stall but finished with purpose to finish runner-up behind the experienced Dark Spectre.

Expected to take a step forward at Lingfield, Amtiyaz was again slowly into stride and found himself too far back in a race not run to suit. The first four home filled those positions throughout and Robert Havlin's mount did extremely well to finish on the heels of fourth-placed Seagulls Nest.

He was the only runner to make any inroads from the rear and this 200,000gns yearling should win his fair share of races over middle distances. [Olly Eden]

Derab
Second, Ascot, Friday, September 4

This maiden for future stayers looked a hot contest on paper and runner-up Derab made a highly promising debut.

Drawn closest to the stands' rail, Martin Harley switched his mount towards the centre three furlongs out but never got a clear passage and was forced to concede first run to the similarly promising La Barrosa from the Charlie Appleby stable.

Travelling powerfully throughout and ridden out under hands and heels, Derab was given the perfect educational ride and pulled nicely clear of the third.

Connections had said beforehand that the colt is a backward sort who was only just ready to run, so it is reasonable to expect plenty of improvement from this first racecourse appearance.

A Derby entry and a half-brother to superstar Enable, he is bred to be very useful and could easily prove stakes class over longer trips next season. [Olly Eden]

Diocletian
Third, Haydock, Saturday, September 5

The ultra-competitive Old Borough Cup saw some hard-luck stories. Diocletian wasn't among them, but there was much to like about the way in which he hit the line to bag third.

This five-year-old has taken time to find his feet in 2020, but he is obviously near the top of his game and a step back up in trip looks sure to suit next time out.

His trainer Andrew Balding's yard houses the current Cesarewitch favourite Coltrane, but next month's marathon test would really suit Diocletian and ante-post odds of 25-1 are more than fair. [Dave Orton]

Ravens Ark
Fourth, Ascot, Saturday, September 5

Considering the Hughie Morrison stable also ran the well-fancied Kipps, it was notable that Ravens Ark also took his place from 1lb out of the weights in the valuable Lavazza Handicap.

He lined up having won both starts since going handicapping but could certainly have been found lesser assignments back on turf for his hat-trick bid.

The colt came unstuck, but he endured a horrid run through from off the pace and was unfortunate not to have had a say in the finish. It won't be long until he regains the winning thread. [Dave Orton]
