Match preview

The Cleveland Browns were on the wrong end of one of the most miraculous comebacks in NFL history last weekend, and they have little time to get over it as they now welcome the Steelers to FirstEnergy Stadium on Thursday Night Football.

The Browns scored a touchdown with just two minutes remaining last Sunday to lead the Jets 30-17, but had a complete meltdown as New York fought back to win 31-30 in the dying seconds.

That sort of defeat will no doubt have a mental impact on the Browns locker room and divisional rivals Pittsburgh look a great bet to take advantage and at least cover the five-point spread.

The Steelers fell to the Patriots 17-14 last week but Pittsburgh do look a better team than most expected at the start of the season, and it’s worth remembering that they beat Super Bowl runners-up Cincinnati on the opening weekend.

The loss of star defensive end TJ Watt is a blow but their defence still boasts plenty of talent and should cause problems for a Browns team who are still finding their feet behind quarterback Jacoby Brissett.

While Browns running back Nick Chubb has started the season in hot fashion, he can’t be expected to carry the entire load and Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin should have a plan in place to contain him. In two games against Pittsburgh last season, Chubb was held to 58 and 61 rushing yards and failed to score a touchdown in either.

Mitch Trubisky has proved himself to be a serviceable signal-caller for Pittsburgh and should be able to conjure some magic with receivers Chase Claypool and Diontae Johnson.

Not many points are expected in this defensive battle and that makes getting the five points with the Steelers even more valuable. Go with the road team to push Cleveland all the way.
