Match preview

American football returns to London on Sunday with the first NFL International Series game of the year between the Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints.

Both teams have looked shaky in the opening weeks of the season but they will have happy memories of the last time they were each in the capital. The Saints shut out the Dolphins in a 20-0 victory at Wembley in October 2017, while the Vikings beat the Browns 33-16 later that month.

For all their stars on offence, including running back Dalvin Cook and receivers Justin Jefferson and Adam Thielen, Minnesota quarterback Kirk Cousins is having a hard time bringing it all together.

The Vikings looked hot in their Week One win over the Green Bay Packers, but they followed that up by registering just seven points against Philadelphia and then failed to score in the first and third quarters against Detroit.

It's unlikely to get any easier for them at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as this New Orleans team does not give up points easily. The Saints held Tampa Bay Buccaneers to just three points through three quarters a couple of weeks ago and allowed just one offensive touchdown against the Panthers last weekend.

For all their defensive excellence, New Orleans' offence has been letting them down and things have gone from bad to worse as star receiver Michael Thomas has been ruled out and quarterback Jameis Winston is doubtful.

Even with those two playing, the Saints have managed just 13 points through the first three quarters of their three games this season, and there is little to indicate that a high-scoring performance is around the corner.

New Orleans' injury problems are likely to further hinder their chances of putting points on the board, especially if Andy Dalton is their starting QB.
