Georgia King: daughter of Alan King makes her racecourse debut

Alan King will leg up the oldest and youngest riders in a charity race run over the Derby course on Monday, in which his daughter Georgia will make her racecourse debut.

The 16-year-old recently competed at the FEI European Pony Championships and has ambitions to eventually become a jockey.

She rides Sula Island for her father, who also saddles Miss Crick, ridden by 60-year-old Lucia Borrodaile, in the Pertemps Champion Willberry Charity Derby.

"Georgia has done a lot of eventing in the last few years," said Alan King. "She's been riding out for two to three months and enjoying it.

"We thought we might get her a ladies' licence for next season. I knew about this race only about a week ago but it's a good way to start, although Epsom isn't the easiest place for her to have her first ride. It's the mile and a half Derby course, start at the top and work down.

"There will be a bit less pressure than a normal race and if all goes well I hope she enjoys it."

He added: "I don't think the rain is going to be in Sula Island's favour. A bigger problem will be getting the weight cloth on. Georgia is only about 7st and the horse has to carry 12st, so the hardest job might be trying to get the lead across the horse's back."

Borrodaile rode in the 1995 Cheltenham Foxhunter and will not lack fitness, having recently completed the amateur Tour de France, a race in which Tim Gredley, owner of Big Orange, also competes.

King added: "Lucia has been riding out for me for the last three or four weeks and is taking it extremely seriously."
