Record-breaking Quevega delivers her fourth foal at the Irish National Stud
Connections yet to decide on mare's next covering
The wonder mare Quevega, who won at six consecutive Cheltenham Festivals, gave birth to her fourth foal on Sunday evening at the Irish National Stud in County Kildare.
Her newest filly was a first by 2,000 Guineas and dual Derby hero Camelot, now in his sixth year of covering.
Patrick Diamond of the stud's nominations and bloodstock management department, reported that the the dark-bay arrival weighed in at 59 kilograms.
"She's a lovely, strong filly and she looks like an exciting prospect for her owners," Diamond said of the foal, who was bred by Quevega's racing owners the Hammer & Trowel Syndicate.
There are no plans for Quevega's next cover, although Diamond was keen to stress that a mare of her quality has "a lot of options".
That quality was demonstrated across an extraordinary racing career. After winning three bumpers in France for Bertrand de Watrigant, Quevega was transferred to Willie Mullins' Closutton Stables in 2008.
Across a seven-year period, the daughter of Robin Des Champs won 16 of her 24 starts under rules, earning £749,280 in prize-money.
The last of Quevega's wins in the David Nicholson Mares' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival made her the first horse to triumph at the meeting six times.
Her first foal, a filly by Beat Hollow named Princess Vega, is now four and was sold to Keatingstown Bloodstock for €50,000 at the Tattersalls Ireland November National Hunt Sale in 2016.
The Irish National Stud also houses Quevega's yearling filly and two-year-old gelding, both by Walk In The Park, who were both described by Diamond as "good physical specimens".
