Peckham readies first British runner by Denman... no, not that one!

Racegoers at Lingfield on Monday could be forgiven a double take when they study their racecard and find a runner sired by Denman.

Of course Jawshan, who will make his debut in the Call Star Sports On 08000 521 321 Maiden Stakes (Div II) over a mile at 3.20, is not a son of the gelded National Hunt legend and Gold Cup hero Denman, who passed away earlier this year.

He is instead the first runner in Britain by Darley Australia's shuttler of the same name, a son of Lonhro who won the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes in his native country back in 2009 in Sheikh Mohammed's famous maroon and white silks.

He has produced five crops of racing age in Australia to date, which have yielded nine stakes winners, chief among them Fitocracy, a Group 3 winner over 1m1f.

Denman shuttled to Darley's American base for one season in 2014, a stint which has produced 51 foals to race so far and 19 winners. It was a mating with the Southern Image mare Diamond Baby that produced Jawshan, who would go on to be picked up by MC Bloodstock from the Taylor Made draft of the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale for $22,000.

He reappeared in May at the Tattersalls Guineas Breeze-Up & HIT Sale, where he was offered by Gaybrook Lodge Stud and bought for 35,000 guineas by Jaber Ramadhan.

Now a gelding, Jawshan will race in the colours of Maher Lutfallah on Monday and trainer George Peckham is optimistic about the horse's future.

"He is a horse that came to me about two months ago, having been with someone else before me and he's been pleasing us at home," he said. "He'll improve for whatever he does and looks like he might want a little bit further in time. Hopefully he'll have a nice experience and improve for time."

On the three-year-old's appearances, being by a Lonhro sire son, Peckham added: "He is a lovely, dark bay horse with plenty of scope and some furnishing still to do.

"I think he'll be a nice horse and one his owner can have a bit of fun with."
