US expert Tom Collins hopes to have a good day at Gulfstream with four top tips
Nikki And Papa
Shes All Woman
It is time to focus in on Gulfstream Park's 12-race card on Sunday night. There appears to be a number of fantastic punting opportunities and it would be rude not to cash in, so I have shortlisted four selections to get stuck into.
The first to note is the Robert Hess-trained filly Nikki And Papa, who runs in the $45,000 maiden special weight (6.27), a contest that looks well above average for the grade.
Trainers Chad Brown, Todd Pletcher and Christophe Clement all run well-bred and expensive debutantes and it wouldn't be a shock if they all proved useful, but they will have to go some to match the level of form shown by Nikki And Papa in two starts so far.
She is clearly held in the highest regard– rightly so given her $500,000 price tag– as she was pitched into Grade 3 company on her debut, and she ran extremely well to take third behind subsequent Davona Dale Stakes winner Tonalist's Shape.
Nikki And Papa broke slowly that day and trailed the six-runner field but stayed on well and wasn't beaten far over the 7f trip at the line.
She wasn't as good next time in the aforementioned Grade 2 Davona Dale Stakes but there was a clear pace bias that day at Gulfstream and her subsequent works suggest she is still performing well in the mornings.
Hess has decided it is time for her to notch a first victory and drops her into maiden company for the first time. From a good draw in stall two, Nikki And Papa should prove tough to hold. She won't be overbet either as her connections aren't the most fashionable.
On the other hand, the next selection will probably be the toast of punters and it will be a touch if she goes off any bigger than 6-4. That runner is Blue Magic, who makes her second outing for top trainer Mike Maker in the $23,000 claimer (6.56), which is run over 5f on the turf.
It is crucial to have an inside draw over this course and distance and Blue Magic has the perfect position in stall two. She doesn't go forward, but should be able to get the dream trip in behind the leadersif Luis Saez can get her across to the rail.
With a record of six wins, four seconds and four thirds from just 16 starts, Blue Magic is an in-form and talented mare and she looks a shrewd pick-up from Maker, who almost won at the first attempt with her here.
She was drawn in the car park that day but finished powerfully to dead-heat for second and will have a much better run through the race here. Blue Magic is better than this level and should have one too many gears for her opponents.
Clockwatchers will be keeping their pockets full ready to supportPrimacy in the following mile $45,000 maiden special weight (7.25).
Bred to stay further than this, Primacy made a brilliant start to her racing career for Chad Brown when a fast-finishing second over 6½f here in February, and the form was given a huge boost when the winner won the feature allowance optional claimer on Friday's Gulfstream card.
Primacy did plenty wrong in that race, too, and was distanced at an early stage behind a fast pace, but picked up in the style of a useful filly late on and Brown leaves plenty to work on with his debutantes.
Better is expected and the presence of Tyler Gaffalione in the saddle is considered a huge positive.
Finally, I'mpinning my hopes to the abilities of Luis Saez, who partnersShes All Woman in the $41,000 allowance optional claimer (8.59).
Drawn widest in the eight-runner field, Saez will need to be able to get a good position over the 6f trip otherwise it could be game over, but there is an abundance of early speed in this sprint and they could all fall into the lap of this consistent sort.
The daughter of Mucho Macho Man is only 2-18 in her career but her most recent form figures of 242223 suggest she is ready to strike again at this level and everything is in line for her to do just that.
Rival Merseyside, who is drawn well in gate two and will undoubtedly go forward, is the main danger, but she could well battle early with the likes of How Sweep It Is and Cory Girl among others and Shes All Woman will be the one to pick up the pieces.
