The Punt Daily: Tom Collins with three to follow on Wednesday
Saint Calvados(2.25 Newbury)
The phrase 'this just wins, doesn't it?' getssaid far too many times for my liking, but this just wins, doesn't it? There was talk of running this five-year-old in the Scilly Isles after his emphatic victory on his British debut over this course and distance, which suggests the regard he's held in, but it's no surprise to see him turn up in a handicap en route to bigger things. Likely to bowl along, he's a great jumper and his natural ability to handle give in the ground puts him one step ahead of the others, who all have questions to answer. War Sound's jumping is sketchy to say the least, Jameson steps back markedly in trip and Tree Of Liberty takes on much better opposition.
Pearl Spectre(12.40 Lingfield)
If you haven't noticed, I'm a big fan of Nicola Currie. The star apprentice is as good as any professional and the fact that she can still claim 5lb is a massive advantage for punters. Consequently, I fancy the chances of topweight Pearl Spectre in the 7f handicap, who was fortunately dropped an extra 2lb by the handicapper despite running a respectable race over this trip at Southwell last time out. Fibresand isn't his best surface and the return to Polytrack here will almost certainly see him put a better display.
Not one forultimate faithconsidering he has a strike-rate of one win from 33 starts, but this five-year-old, who is trained by the in-form Roger Fell, has now dropped to a career-low mark of 51 (5lb lower than when winning at this course in November 2016) and has shown signs in recent starts that he's ready to take advantage. An unlucky third over this course and distance three starts back, he travelled like the best horse in the race that day but found trouble (as he did on his penultimate start at Wolverhampton) and went down by three-quarters of a length. He can go close.
