The departure of Silvestre de Sousa for Britain has left plenty of opportunities for Hong Kong’s resident top jockeys, and talented Karis Teetancan be one of the first to capitalise.
De Sousa rode 44 winners during his short stint in Hong Kong, a performance only rivalled by Christophe Soumillon several years ago, and he proved extremely popular with owners and trainers.
Now they have to fill the gaps left by the three-time British champion.
Teetan, who sits a clear second in the Hong Kong table with 63 winners,is one of the more reliable riders and it is no surprise that trainer Tony Millard has turned to the Mauritian to partner one of his rising stars, Gift Of Lifeline, in the Class4 6f sprint (12.15) at Happy Valley.
Theson of Pierro was having only his fourth start when he opened his winning account with De Sousa in the saddle over course and distance three weeks ago.
He has gone up 6lb for that tidy win, and although drawn a little wider this time, he still seems ahead of the handicapper.
Teetan and Millard can also combine in the closingClass 31m½f handicap (2.50) with impressive last-time-out winner Arcada.
Itwas no surprise to see theRip Van Winklegelding put up 5lb for that success, but when you consider he finished third to Best Of Days in the Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket earlier in his career, he should cope.
The ex-Joseph O’Brien five-year-old took a long time to acclimatise in Hong Kong, with that first win locally comingon his 11th start.
Zac Purton continues to set the standard in the Hong Kong ranks. A treble at Sha Tin on Sunday took his tally to 89 wins for the season, and Little Bird can add to that score in the Class 2 5f sprint (2.15).
The Ricky Yiu-trained gelding is up in grade but is drawn nicely in gate four and can win again. He has won threeof his 13 starts in Hong Kong and is very smart.
