Star can shine to land fifth career win at Happy Valley
11.15 Happy Valley
1.45 Happy Valley
2.50 Happy Valley
John Size and Joao Moreira can be relied upon to come to the aid of punters again with two of their most progressive horses at Happy Valley today.
Size has a name for developing raw talent, and Country Star (2.50), one of the best examples of his mastery, is tipped to land his fifth win in seven starts when contesting the closing 6f handicap.
The Australian-bred gelding by Starcraft, made his racecourse debut only five months ago and has since made rapid progress, leap-frogging his way through the classes in impressive style.
It is interesting to note that all his four wins to date have been over today’s course and distance, though ultimately he is destined to break through at Sha Tin, as well. From gate three, Moreira is likely to have Country Star prominent throughout, and he is a safe bet to end the meeting on a winning note.
Earlier, Red Warrior (1.45) can also strike a blow for the Size/Moreira combo in the Hong Kong Challenge Cup. This is the gelding’s second attempt at the trip, having been touched off at the Valley two starts ago by the capable Super Chic. With an inside draw, the ‘Magic Man’ will be box-seating at the judge the first time and enjoying the run of the race.
Although Moreira is quickly making up for lost time in the jockeys’ title race – he has swiftly moved into third – the accomplished Karis Teetan holds down second place and continues to impress.
The Mauritius-born rider is to be followed aboard Raichu (11.15) in the opener. Raichu is very nicely placed with a rating of 35, having won over course and distance off 38, and been placed off 40. His last two runs on the all-weather track at Sha Tin should be ignored.
