Paul Kealy provides his Placepot perm at Newmarket
Banking on horses in novice races for the Placepot doesn't always come off, but the favourites in the two novice contests at Newmarket look strong enough, which gives us a bit of leeway to load up on the competitive handicaps.
(12.00) in the opening leg has a 6lb penalty for his win at Leicester, but he scored in terrific style and sets a warm standard for those yet to run to aim at, while (2.50) in the closing leg will be an even warmer order.
Darrain has got some way to go to match his siblings Too Darn Hot, So Mi Dar and Lah Ti Dar, but he sure made a big impression on his debut.
In between it's a lot more difficult but (12.35) has run three fine races this term and is still well handicapped on his old form despite a 7lb rise for his easy Bath win.
He goes in alongside Gay Kelleway's , who ran right up to form when third on the quick ground he seems to relish at Yarmouth last week.
In the next (1.10) I'm quite keen to take on short-priced favourite Al Rufaa on quick ground he has never tried (won on soft).
is the main fancy, but had some interesting form behind decent horses as a juvenile and his returning fourth last month was encouraging enough.
(1.40) obviously got in very lightly for her handicap debut at Chepstow last week and is surely going to take the beating in leg four, but the seven-runner fifth leg looks hard.
is the obvious one as his new mark of 92 hasn't kicked in yet so he's 5lb well in, but there are only two places on offer and there are a few likely improvers against him.
I'll add Yes My Boy, who was a good second to John Gosden's Tsar when last seen. The winner is a fairly short price for a televised handicap at Ascot tomorrow.
