Nassau value lies with 20-1 shot Wuheida after pleasing return

Godolphin filly will come on for her first start in nine months

Roly Poly’s success in the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket’s July meeting strengthened Aidan O’Brien’s hand in the three-year-old filly division, but the runner-up Wuheida made a pleasing return to action and may have more to offer.

Roly Poly, who had chased home Winter in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Irish 1,000 Guineas, took advantage of her stablemate's absence in what looked a below-par Group 1 to gift O’Brien his 11th top-flight victory of the season.

Winter has looked untouchable since routing her 1,000 Guineas field at Newmarket in May and she looks to be getting better.

However, if the daughter of Galileo lines up in the Nassau Stakes at Glorious Goodwood she will be tackling her elders for the first time and will be faced with an extra two furlongs - two variables that make her look a little short in the betting at around 15-8.

The Classic generation have won six of the last ten Nassaus, though, helped by a healthy 8lb weight allowance, and Wuheida looks a solid alternative at 20-1 given she ought to come on in leaps and bounds for that Newmarket return.

Charlie Appleby’s charge landed the Prix Marcel Boussac at Chantilly as a two-year-old and has always promised to deliver much more when faced with a stiffer test of stamina.

The daughter of Dubawi, who was having just her third start, found Roly Poly too good in the Falmouth, but that was her first appearance for nine months and she travelled through the contest much like the best filly, suggesting she retains all the ability of last year. Unlike Roly Poly, she didn’t have the rail to race against either.

She looked suited by the fast ground and stepping up to ten furlongs at Goodwood in August looks a sensible move.

It’s possible Appleby could stick to the mile given the raw speed she displayed and wait for the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown, but he confirmed after the Falmouth that the Nassau had been in his mind initially and Godolphin may well be keen to make up for lost time.
