Kempton runner Mia's Storm our Christmas hope
I’m hoping our Christmas star will be Mia’s Storm, whose target for some time has been the 32Red Kauto Star Novices’ Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day.
She isn’t a big, robust mare, so the plan after her win at Market Rasen was always to wait for Kempton.
If the race begins to look ridiculously hot, or the ground becomes bottomless, we could consider a mares’ race at Doncaster, but that is only a back-up. I really do want to take her to Kempton.
I thought she was hugely impressive when winning her Listed race and this looks a sensible place to try her in Grade 1 company. I very much think the Kauto Star is a race in which she is well worthy of running.
Midnight Maestro made a shocking error at Ascot’s first hurdle, after which it was in effect race over.
Barry [Geraghty] feels he will be able to race more within his comfort zone over this longer trip and there’s a decent race in him.
Sir Antony Browne has been off since April. I do worry about his 141 handicap mark. He went up 12lb for finishing third in an Ayr novice hurdle, which appears pretty severe.
Bastien, who won so well at Towcester, goes for the Pertemps qualifier at Wincanton as I want to get him qualified for the final. He went up 10lb for his win but we’ll leave Kevin Dowling on him.
I’ll consider Passing Call for the mares’ novice hurdle. I might well have run her back too quickly at Southwell.
