Prague Open
Starts 11.30am Monday, Amazon Prime

The women are out in force in the Czech Republic and Kentucky this week, and Simona Halep, who gets two years’ reign as Wimbledon champion thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, is the bill-topper in the Prague Open on outdoor red clay.

Halep looks fit and well, too, and it would be no surprise if the title favourite were to waltz to the Czech title – she was a late withdrawal from last week’s Palermo event due to travel restrictions.

At the odds available, however, it may be wiser to plump for a bigger-priced rival who also shows traits of feistiness.

Fiona Ferro, who certainly is feisty, made yesterday’s Palermo final but it’s probably asking a bit much of the Italian to go deep in a tougher event.

Ekaterina Alexandrova came up short against Ferro last week, but the Russian could be more of a force this week.

Top Seed Open
Starts 3pm Monday, Amazon Prime

It’s a veritable who’s who of women’s tennis in Lexington this week and the Top Seed Open turnout gives hope for the immediate future of the WTA Tour.

Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Aryna Sabalenka, Victoria Azarenka, Sloane Stephens, Amanda Anisimova, Johanna Konta and Cori Gauff are all set to play on the DecoTurf II hardcourts.

Outright punters may be better off focusing on the easier-looking bottom half of the draw. Gauff could well meet Sabalenka in round two, so the value may lie with Cincinnati teen star Caty McNally.
