Su-Wei Hsieh set for silverware on trip to Thailand
Play starts 3am Monday
Naomi Osaka is set to be named world number one after claiming a second career Grand Slam title at last week’s Australian Open and one of her Melbourne Park victims, Su-Wei Hsieh, could frank the form with victory in the Thailand Open.
The Taiwanese ace claimed the opening set in her third-round clash with Osaka and although unable to build on her lead, it was further evidence that she is capable of competing with the game's elite.
Prior to that, Hsieh eased past Australian Open semi-finalist Danielle Collins in the opening round of the Sydney International and wasn’t disgraced in defeat in her following match against Petra Kvitova (7-6 6-2), runner-up to the supremely talented Osaka in Melbourne.
The competition is far weaker in Hua Hin, where inconsistent world number 18 Garbine Muguruza is top seed, and Hsieh could prosper.
A curtain-raiser against Romanian Monica Niculescu, a first round casualty in last week’s Grand Slam, should pose few problems. She can also get the better of the fellow-seed in her quarter Shuai Zhang, who has lost four of their five previous hard-court meetings.
A potential semi-final showdown with silky Spaniard Muguruza is a potential stumbling block but Hsieh won their only previous battle in straight sets at last season’s Australian Open and at 8-1 she represents the each-way value.
