WTA Adelaide 2 preview

World number one Iga Swiatek and third seed Jessica Pegula were late withdrawals from the WTA Adelaide 2 draw, but a strong field has still been assembled as the players get a final chance to fine-tune their game before the Australian Open.

Ons Jabeur is now tournament top seed and the Tunisian reached the semi-final of the first Adelaide event last week.

However, Jabeur has a tricky looking draw this time and at bigger odds a chance is taken on Belinda Bencic putting her best foot forward.

Garbine Muguruza has struggled to find her best form for some time so Bencic should win their opening clash, while the Swiss star would also be a worthy favourite against Jelena Ostapenko in round two.

Tournament favourite Caroline Garcia is likely to be lurking in the quarter-final but Bencic, who showed herself to be in decent nick when beating Yulia Putintseva at the United Cup, should fancy her chances.

Bencic was beaten by Swiatek following that win but she was competitive - losing 6-3 7-6 - and the former US Open semi-finalist is worth backing for some early-season silverware.
