England need four points to guarantee automatic qualification for the 2022 World Cup after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Hungary at Wembley.

A 37th-minute goal from John Stones rescued a point for the Three Lions and left them three points above Poland, who climbed into second place with a 1-0 victory away to Albania.

It was a largely disjointed performance from Gareth Southgate's side, who are 8-1 to triumph in Qatar next year. However, they should have few problems getting to the finals.

They will be heavy favourites to win both of their remaining games – at home to Albania and away to San Marino – and attention is already switching to the debate around what players and tactics will be deployed in Qatar.

Southgate went with an attack-minded 4-3-3 formation against Hungary but few clear-cut chances were created and he showed his ruthless side by substituting Jack Grealish and Harry Kane in the second half.

Scotland's situation is much more in the balance - they are 6-4 with Coral to reach Qatar 2022 - although they are on course for the playoffs after Lyndon Dykes's scrappy 86th-minute goal sealed them a 1-0 success away to the Faroe Islands.

The Scots need three more points to clinch second place in Group F ahead of Israel and have games away to basement boys Moldova and at home to sectional winners Denmark on their November schedule.

If they advance as one of the top six second-placed sides (they are third of ten as things stand) they will be handed a home draw in the playoff semi-finals.

Wales are third in Group E after Monday's 1-0 success away to Estonia, although they have played one game less than second-placed Czech Republic, who are above them on goal difference.

Northern Ireland's elimination was confirmed when they lost 2-1 in Bulgaria on Tuesday.
