Valentino Rossi value for Silverstone pole battle

British Grand Prix qualifying

Yamaha apologised to their factory riders Valentino Rossi and Maverick Vinales for the uncompetitive machinery they provided in Austria last time but the bike looks much sharper for the British Grand Prix this week.

Vinales headed Friday morning's practice at Silverstone and failed by just 0.06 seconds to repeat the feat in the afternoon.

Rossi ended both sessions in the lower reaches of the top ten but that doesn't tell the whole story as he was right up with the pace at times.

The Doctor is known as a Sunday man but he has really got his act together in qualifying recently with front-row starts in Czech Republic and Holland and a pole position in Italy. The Italian could be a touch of value.

Championship leader Marc Marquez hasn't won at Silverstone for four years but write him off at your peril.

Ducati are the form team and Andrea Dovizioso, last year's Silverstone winner, topped afternoon practice. The Italian is favourite for qualifying but has only one pole position in the last 30 races.

Jorge Lorenzo leapfrogged his teammate Dovizioso in the championship by winning in Austria, but the Spaniard, too, has a mediocre qualifying record this year.
