Day three preview

Following his straight-sets demolition of Stefan Kozlov in the first round, men's top seed Daniil Medvedev is back in action on day three of the US Open and is 1-33 to overpower Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech.

British veteran Andy Murray will also be back on court on Wednesday after recording his first straight-sets win at a Grand Slam since Wimbledon 2017 over Francisco Cerundolo and his reward is a second-round tie with home talent Emilio Nava.

Serena Williams began her US Open farewell with a first-round win against Danka Kovinic in front of a near-capacity 25,000 crowd and her second-round encounter against talented Estonian Anett Kontaveit is another not to be missed on day three.

Tim van Rijthoven v Casper Ruud

Plucky Dutchman Tim van Rijthoven made a name for himself on grass courts earlier this year, beating Daniil Medvedev in the final of the Rosmalen Grass Court Championships and making the last 16 at Wimbledon.

But the transition to hard courts has not been smooth for the 25-year-old, who is unlikely to cause many problems for red-hot Casper Ruud.

Fifth seed Ruud has enjoyed a superb 2022 and although clay remains his preferred surface, he showed his class on hard courts when making the semi-finals of the ATP Montreal earlier this month.

He blitzed past Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-1 6-2 in the quarter-finals of that event and he can record a 3-0 win over Van Rijthoven, who could be a touch fatigued after his five-set thriller with Zhang Zhizhen in the first round in New York.

Tommy Paul v Sebastian Korda

One of the closest betting heats on day three is an all-American affair between Tommy Paul and Sebastian Korda.

But Korda can take confidence from the fact he leads the head-to-head with his compatriot 3-0 with two of those triumphs having come on hard courts last year.

Runner-up at the Next Gen ATP finals last year, Korda's preparations for the US Open went well with runs to the quarter-finals of the Citi Open and the last 16 of the Cincinnati Masters and he is worth a bet at 4-5 to book his spot in the third round.

Beatriz Haddad Maia v Bianca Andreescu

What a year it is turning out to be for Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia.

After an impressive grass-court campaign which featured title wins at the Nottingham Open and Birmingham Classic, the 26-year-old began her US Open preparations with a run to the final in Toronto, swatting aside Iga Swiatek and Belinda Bencic along the way.

And in her first US Open as a seeded player, Haddad Maia started the season's final Grand Slam with a sensational double-bagel victory over Ana Konjuh.

She should be brimming with confidence right now and is a great bet to see off Canadian Bianca Andreescu, who opened with victory over Harmony Tan but wobbled in the second set and is not playing at the same level as she was when winning the 2019 US Open.
