UFC 321 preview

Tom Aspinall will finally get his big moment as the UFC’s undisputed heavyweight champion when he faces Ciryl Gane at UFC 321.

Previously the interim belt holder, Aspinall was elevated to full championship status in the summer following the retirement of Jon Jones.

The hard-hitting Englishman has had nine UFC fights, amassing a total cage time of just 1,121 seconds, which amounts to close to four full five-minute rounds.

Six of his eight wins have come via knockout and two by submission, and his last three victories all ended within 90 seconds of the referee's call to fight.

However, since a 60-second knockout of Curtis Blaydes in July 2024, he has been inactive while waiting for a potential fight with Jones.

The Manchester clash with Blaydes marked a rare defence of the interim title, which Aspinall won when flattening then-feared Russian Sergei Pavlovich inside 70 seconds in November 2023.

For Gane, this will be his third shot at undisputed gold having lost to both Francis Ngannou and Jones, although he was crowned interim champion when knocking out Derrick Lewis in 2021.

The French fighter is a talented kickboxer with superb distance management, but he also hasn't been seen in the Octagon since last year, opting instead to pursue a starring role in a Netflix movie and modelling opportunities.

The 34-year-old was last seen in December, gaining a controversial win over Alexander Volkov after a 15-month absence.

Gane’s grappling has let him down on more than one occasion at the top level and, with Aspinall’s wrestling pedigree, he could run into more problems in Abu Dhabi.

Both men are more athletic and fleet-footed than most heavyweights, but Aspinall’s power and creation of angles when coming in could well be the difference.

Aspinall has the edge in all departments and should be backed to remain the champion with a finish. He has never been beyond the second round in UFC, so adding in under 2.5 rounds offers an opportunity to boost the odds.

UFC 321 undercard preview

The rest of the UFC 321 card sees the women's strawweight championship clash between Virna Jandiroba and Mackenzie Dern, while heavy favourite Umar Nurmagomedov returns to face the red-hot Mario Bautista at Bantamweight.

An interesting heavyweight fight on the main card features Alexander Volkov as the underdog against Jailton Almeida.

Volkov lost a controversial split decision to Gane last December, breaking a run of four straight wins, including against Sergei Pavlovich and Jairzinho Rozenstruik.

Although Almeida is a talented grappler, he could find problems unless takedowns come easy, which could be difficult against the tricky 6ft 7in Russian.

Ikram Aliskerov can record another finish in front of a partisan crowd against Jun-Yong Park.

Aliskerov has three first-round stoppages to his name in the UFC, while his only defeat came when stepping up to face former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker at short notice last June.

Park has a come-forward style with solid grappling, but has yet to find a finish on the feet in nine UFC wins, which will give Aliskerov even more confidence in his striking.

Aliskerov feels beyond this level of competition already and his power advantage in the stand-up and supreme combat sambo grappling is tipping the scales in favour of another finish.
