Olly Alexander is the 7-2 favourite with Paddy Power to be named as the next Doctor Who following Jodie Whittaker's recent announcement that she is to step down from the role after three seasons at the helm of the Tardis.

Harrogate-born 31-year-old Alexander, star of the hit TV series It's A Sin as well as being a singer-songwriter who records under the name Years & Years, was mentioned as a possible 14th Doctor before Whittaker's revelation.

Alexander has already received the backing of former Doctor Who writer-producer Russell T Davies, who ran the show from 2005 until 2010.

Kris Marshall, star of Death In Paradise from 2014-17, is shading second favouritism in the new Doctor Who odds at 11-2 ahead of 6-1 legend Sir Lenny Henry.

Michaela Coel is 8-1 to make it back-to-back women in the role, while eighth Doctor Paul McGann is 10-1 for a second stint as the Time Lord after his appearance in the 1996 US-made TV movie 'Doctor Who'.

It's 14-1 bar the first five in the betting but if anyone could upset Alexander it may be 62-year-old Henry.

Another experienced thespian, Peter Capaldi, was magnificent as the Doctor between 2013 and 2017 and West Midlander Henry's acting skills have been regarded much more highly in recent years.

He won the Critics' Circle Theatre award for best actor in 2013 for his role in Fences.
