The most exciting and competitive Tour de France for years took another twist on Monday when several leading contenders lost chunks of time late on stage ten as crosswinds blew the peloton apart in the last 30 kilometres.

Stage victory went to rising star Wout van Aert of Jumbo-Visma as he outmuscled Elia Viviani in the uphill sprint in Albi, but the story of the day was the shake-up in the general classification standings and betting.

Geraint Thomas shortened to a best-priced 8-11 from Evens after his Team Ineos were the main drivers in forcing the splits on a dramatic run-in.

Thibaut Pinot, Jakob Fuglsang, Rigoberto Uran and Richie Porte – all in the top ten in the betting on Monday morning – finished one minute 40 seconds behind the leading group, which contained Thomas and his teammate Egan Bernal as well as yellow jersey Julian Alaphilippe, Movistar’s Nairo Quintana and Adam Yates of Mitchelton-Scott.

Others on the positive side of the split included Steven Kruijswijk, last year’s Tour fifth, and young guns Emanuel Buchmann and Enric Mas.

Mikel Landa of Movistar, another leading fancy, was an even bigger loser, coming in 2:09 behind the leaders, along with white jersey Giulio Ciccone.

Pinot, who had stamped himself a big danger with a flawless opening week, saw all his good work undone as the hammer went down in the crosswinds and he dropped from third overall to 11th, drifting to 16-1 from 11-2.

Fuglsang, the pre-race third favourite behind Bernal and Thomas, is out to 40-1, Porte 66-1, Uran 80-1 and Landa 100-1.

Tuesday is the first rest day and a testing few days lie ahead before the next one on Monday, with mountain stages in the Pyrenees on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday and the 27.2km time trial around Pau on Friday.
