Stage 19 preview

The destination of the yellow jersey has pretty much been known since the end of the first week of the Tour de France but just for good measure race leader Tadej Pogacar won his second stage in as many days on Thursday to ram home his superiority.

Pogacar has only three stages to negotiate - two flat tests and Saturday's time trial - to retain his title. The 22-year-old has 5mins 45secs on Jonas Vingegaard, who leads third-placed Richard Carapaz by six seconds.

The Slovenian's victory in the Pyrenees on stage 18 also confirmed him as the winner of the King of the Mountains classification for the second year running.

With the general classification done and dusted bar disaster, attention turns to Mark Cavendish and his quest to win the green jersey and become the winningmost stage victor in the Tour's history.

Cavendish has two chances to move clear of Eddy Merckx with a 35th stage success, starting with Friday's flat 207km route from Mourenx to Libourne.

He is the likeliest winner should he be involved in the sprint but the question is just how much battling the time cut in the mountains in the last couple of days has taken out of the Manx ace.
