Progressive Aliaksandra Sasnovich could shine in weaker half of Wuhan draw

Bencic worth an interest now she's building confidence on court

The 15 top-ranked players in the women's game have travelled to China's Hubei province for the lucrative Wuhan Open - the Williams sisters are the notable absentees this week - and French Open champion Simona Halep is unsurprisingly the market leader after her exploits in 2018.

Some of the seeded players in Wuhan have been busy in the days leading up to the Premier Five tournament - US Open champion Naomi Osaka, Karolina Pliskova and Kiki Bertens looked to be giving it plenty last week - and they can be passed over this week.

Halep has an obvious chance considering Sloane Stephens may not be fully focused on this tournament and Caroline Wozniacki, Garbine Muguruza and Jelena Ostapenko suffered confidence-bashing losses last week.

Angelique Kerber, Petra Kvitova, Elina Svitolina, Daria Kasatkina and Elise Mertens could be turning out fresher in Wuhan but it may be worth chancing a couple of outsiders whose games are on the up.

Aliaksandra Sasnovich, who is starting to trouble the bigger names more often, is in the slightly easier bottom half of the draw and the progressive Belarusian can be chanced, while it may not be long before we see better from Belinda Bencic, who has been gradually building confidence after debilitating injury issues last season.
