The WTA Japan Open takes centre stage in Tokyo this week and three-time winner Sam Stosur is a fascinating contender on her return to action.

The Aussie veteran has not been seen since going down in a deciding set in the last 16 of the French Open to tournament winner Jelena Ostapenko but she looks to have plotted her return wisely and on the pick of her form would take the world of beating.

Stosur has an easy looking opener against the inexperienced Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo before a potential showdown with American Christina McHale, who she leads 4-2 in their personal series.

The 33-year-old has been in excellent form this term. She clinched the Strasbourg Open in May, and if she is fit enough to do herself justice she can put up a bold show.

Fellow bottom-half seeds Elise Mertens and Shuai Zhang may give her most to think about but neither are prolific winners and Stosur's power could prove the telling factor.
