Pierre Hugues-Herbert has had a strong start to the year – reaching a career ranking high of 36 in February – and looks a tempting wager as an underdog to topple compatriot Jeremy Chardy in the first round of the Lyon Open.

The only previous meeting between the players was at the second round stage of last year's French Open when Herbert dug deep to prevail 2-6 6-3 6-2 3-6 9-7.

Getting to the third round at Roland Garros was Herbert's joint-best effort at a Grand Slam and he also reached the last 32 at this year's Australian Open before losing in straight sets to Milos Raonic.

Herbert, who turned 28 in March, seems to be improving with age and is having a superior season to 32-year-old Chardy, whose best days may be behind him.

Chardy hasn't reached the last eight of any tournament since advancing to the semi-finals in Brisbane at the start of the year and looks an odds-on favourite worth opposing.

Albert Ramos-Vinolas had issues with a wrist injury last season but has looked more like his old self recently and could have a decent run at the Geneva Open this week.

The Spanish player competed well at the Italian Open last week – defeating 15th seed Gael Monfils 6-3 6-1 in the first round – and is far more comfortable on clay than his Geneva Open first round opponent Adrian Mannarino.

Ramos-Vinolas has faced Mannarino twice on clay courts, winning in straight sets on both occasions.

Expect him to register another comfortable victory.
