Jeremy Chardy was coming in for support for his Monte Carlo Masters first-round clash with fellow Frenchman Richard Gasquet, but the match provides the 2016 French Open quarter-finalist with a chance to set out his stall in the tournament.

Gasquet is still fighting his way back to form after injury, but he's the class operator in this match-up and the fact that Chardy had two easy wins in qualifying may not help him that much.

The world and his wife are against Tennys Sandgren for his opener against Philipp Kohlschreiber.

But Sandgren played some decent stuff last week in Houston, where he was edged out for the title by Steve Johnson, and it's just possible that he could upset the seasoned German.

The Americans have always been well thought of for turning up in Monaco and Sandgren deserves much credit for making the effort after a busy week in Texas.
