There are few players on tour who can cope with a healthy Sam Querrey, a giant American who is blessed with a colossal serve, and recent performances suggest the Nevada native is fit and firing.

Injuries have been an issue for Querrey in recent seasons but he has been picky with his appearances of late and he tends to come into his own at this time of year, with his home Grand Slam - the US Open - on the horizon.

The 31-year-old served his way to the last eight at Wimbledon in July, having prepared by making the final at Eastbourne a week before.

Querrey made his return to action at Cincinnati last week and should be delighted having overcome talented Frenchman Pierre Hugues Herbert in straight sets before bumping into a dominant Novak Djokovic, who beat him 7-5 6-1.

However, the field at the Winston-Salem Open represents a significant drop in grade for Querrey, who has also found himself in a nice section of the draw.

The American receives a first-round bye before a potential second-round clash with limited Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena, who is far happier on a slower surface.

Andrey Rublev, Albert Ramos Vinolas and Denis Shapovalov are all lurking in Querrey’s quarter but the American can blast his way past those before taking care of his semi-final challenger - Frances Tiafoe or Hubert Hurkacz look most likely.

Querrey is the rightful favourite and looks a good bet to go all the way.

In the top-half of the draw, Pablo Carreno Busta should enjoy a profitable tournament.

The Spaniard sprang a surprise when winning this event in 2016 and he made the semi-finals last year, having toppled seeds Hyeon Chung and Peter Gojowczyk.

A run to the last 16 in Cincinnati, where John Isner was on his list of victims, should tee him up nicely for another shot at silverware and he has landed in what looks the softest quarter.

Karolina Muchova confirmed she is a player on the rise when dumping out her high-profile compatriot Karolina Pliskova on her way to the Wimbledon quarter-finals and the Czech performer may be ready to make her mark in New York.

Muchova also made the final of her home event in Prague as a wildcard in May and she has had a promising season without yet securing the silverware her performances deserve.

However, the Bronx Open poses a very winnable opportunity for the 22-year-old, who should soon scale much greater heights than her world ranking of 48 suggests.

Muchova's quarter-final appearance at Wimbledon should have taught her plenty and there are few players in this field who would be able to emulate that.

There should be little to fear for the Czech youngster in the early rounds and she looks overpriced at 16-1 in what looks a wide-open bottom half of the draw.
