Tournament previews

Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas are the headline acts in Vienna’s Erste Bank Open, but the heavyweight duo may be upstaged by progressive Pole Hubert Hurkacz.

Hurkacz has already clinched three titles in a breakthrough year on the ATP Tour, and at just 24 years of age there should be plenty more to come from him.

His latest title win came in Metz in September and he was far from disgraced when making the quarter-finals of Indian Wells, where he bumped into a resurgent Grigor Dimitrov.

The fifth seed had earlier claimed the scalps of Frances Tiafoe and Aslan Karatsev, who was challenging for silverware in Moscow on Sunday, so the form looks strong and his draw in Vienna looks a decent one.

Hurkacz, who still has his sights on a place in the eight-man ATP Tour Finals, starts his tournament against Andy Murray before a potential last-16 clash with Carlos Alcaraz or Dan Evans.

The Pole has already toppled Murray twice in straight sets since August and given third seed Matteo Berrettini is operating well below his best at the moment, Hurkacz is fancied to navigate his way to the last four.

A semi-final showdown with Olympic champion Zverev may be on the cards but the German insisted he was feeling the effects of a "very long season" when exiting at the quarter-final stage at Indian Wells, so could be a vulnerable favourite.

With that in mind, quotes of 14-1 about Hurkacz make plenty of appeal from an each-way perspective.
