Grass specialist Dan Evans set to step up on south coast

Kyle Edmund is the favourite for the ATP Nature Valley International in Eastbourne but the British number one has won just two matches since March and is hard to trust on home turf this week.

He headlines a less-than-stellar field which has been deprived of big- name players. Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka competed in the event last year and Novak Djokovic was champion in 2017, but world number 24 Guido Pella is the top seed this time around.

While Edmund might fail to justify favouritism, another Briton may still be worth backing.

Dan Evans is never far from the headlines - the controversial Birmingham man has recently been involved in a public spat with Jamie Murray over the merits of doubles tennis - but the 29-year-old has been letting his game do the talking.

Evans won the Surbiton Trophy at the beginning of this month and followed up with victory in Nottingham. While both are Challenger Tour events, he could be ready to finally pick up some silverware at the top level.

The Brit has battled back following a drugs ban and has every chance of going close in a wide-open draw.

His defeat against Wawrinka at Queen's Club last week can be excused given Evans' busy schedule and bookmakers look to be taking a chance in offering the grass specialist at 22-1.

In Monday's matches in the Eastbourne women's event (Eurosport 1, 11am), Caroline Wozniacki looks worth taking on when she faces tricky Belgian Kirsten Flipkens in the opening round.

The Dane is the better player, but she has never looked comfortable on grass, failing to go beyond the fourth round at Wimbledon in 12 attempts, and her focus has been elsewhere after she married former basketball pro David Lee last week.

Flipkens is a more natural grass player and demonstrated her talents by making the quarter-finals in Den Bosch two weeks ago. Back her to cause a small upset.
