Petra Kvitova has found greater consistency recently and the Czech could take a lot of stopping in the WTA Madrid Open, which starts on Thursday.

The fact that Kvitova won this title in 2011, 2015 and 2018, often playing sublime tennis to lift the trophy, means she is firmly on the oddsmakers' radar for her title tilts in this 1,000 Series tournament at altitude in the Spanish capital.

However, the level of calm on court she has recently discovered means Kvitova has even better credentials for landing a fourth crown – and even serial winner, world number one and top seed Ashleigh Barty may find last month's Doha champion tough to crack should they clash in the quarter-finals.

French Open heroine Iga Swiatek, who could meet Barty in the third round, is edging outright favouritism in an event missing only three of the world's top 30 players.

But while the Pole could prosper if rediscovering the form that took her to Roland Garros glory last October, there may be better value in an interest on Sara Sorribes Tormo.

The Spaniard opens her campaign against 2016 and 2017 Madrid champion Simona Halep, but such is the level last month's Acapulco winner Sorribes Tormo has attained in the last six months means she may soon be dining at the top table.
